Hey everyone,
I am so sorry that I have been so behind on updating you all on what is going on with Lenny and Mackenzie. It has been absolutely crazy here since after the holidays and is getting crazier by the day! I don't remember where I left off on telling you about how things are going with the school, so I will just start the update from where we are at today.
At the end of Feb., Lenny had his first A1C test done. I am still waiting to hear what the results were, however, I am thinking I might call Children's Hospital of Pgh. to see if they can tell me what they were.
As far as the school, his teachers were supposed to do a "home visit" early in Feb., however, they never showed for that one. When I called that morning because they didnt show, they told me they werent coming, and didnt have any particular reason as to why (they gave me NO reason). However, they did reschedule it for later in the month (it was actually on the same day as Lennys endo appointment and I was concerned it would take too long and we'd be late for his endo appointment, sigh). They showed up for that one, and basically they just told me he is improving well in school since his diagnosis. It is amazing how diabetes can affect the way a kid learns. His speech is even improving well.
We dont have quite as many issues with the one teacher now (atleast for now lol), however, I do have a BIG issue with the retarded dietician they have working part time for the school. This lady cant even seem to count carbs correctly! Sad thing is, 1) shes a DIETICIAN! She SHOULD know how to count carbs better than ME! 2) She needs to get her act together and learn how to do this stuff properly because this is my sons life shes messing with! No wonder his numbers are ALWAYS crazy when hes at school, but are usually pretty good when hes here.
Now, I have been able to get the School Order adjusted so that I can make changes to his insulin doses as well as meals as I see fit. However, MY dietician from CHP suggested to me that I dont make adjustments to the carb count while he is at school because she feels that would be too many changes at once to see a significant change in his sugar numbers (even though I know how things are affecting Lenny, but hey, if thats what she thinks, fine, I'll roll with it for a bit, then, not next week, but the following week when I call in his numbers, I will make the suggestion myself to the doc lol).
So far, over the last few days, lennys sugar has been running high. Wednesday, he was in the 400s most of the day, with no particular reason, other than the insulin crapping out too soon. Now, on monday, when he was at school, the nurse called me at his afternoon snack time to tell me that he was 54. She told me that he refused to eat lunch, the only thing he ate for lunch that day was the lettuce, and before he went down for lunch, she dosed him 1.5 units (like she was supposed to) because he was 211 then. Then, after he came up from lunch, they gave him the exercise routine they are supposed to (Ill explain the changes with this in a minute), plus the whole class had a LOT of exercise going on in the classroom as well, so with all the exercise Lenny was getting, he was sweating, and the insulin and exercise, and really no lunch combination, no wonder he bottomed out! I told her to give him 2oz of juice, give him 1 full starch exchange (which is another story I will have to tell you about), and he should be fine. If he should be high at dinner time, I can always make adjustments to make things work out. Well, at dinner time, he had a perfect number, so it all worked out well.
The nurse did tell me that she forgot to call me after he ate lunch that day because she had another child in there at the same time, and things got crazy. Being that that was the first day of that new change, as well as a few other changes, I was understanding, but I did tell her to make sure she calls me after lunch next time he refuses to eat so that we can figure out something else that he will eat so that he can get the carbs that he needs for the insulin so he doesnt bottom out again.
Now, The changes with his exercise routine. Up until last friday, they were checking his sugar for afternoon snack at 2:40pm, giving him exercise because he was always high, then sending him down for snack time at 3pm. Well, his lunch time there is from 12:15/12:30ish to 1pm. SO of course he is going to still be pretty high by 2:40pm!! Thats only an hour and 40 minutes after eating! So, I told them instead of doing it that way, when he comes up for lunch, do the exercising right away after lunch, so that he can go ahead and start burning off some of those carbs he's just taken in, then send him to class. At snack time, check his sugar at about 2:50pm to 2:55pm and send him to snack. That way its a more accurate number, and chances are he will be able to have more of a regular snack rather than just veggies all the time. Well, monday was the first time they could do that, and that was all screwed up. Then tuesday he started running high all day. He was high at lunch, and since the dietician thinks 1/2 cup of baked beans is only 1 starch exchange instead of 2, he was still pretty high at afternoon snack, and dinner. Now, I understand that it may depend on HOW the baked beans are being made, but obviously his numbers are showing me that he got 4 starch exchanges that day instead of 3 like he is supposed to. Since then, it has been absolute HELL trying to get his numbers back under control again! Sigh.
Now, thats just ONE screw-up from the dietician. There have been several others as well, including my other reference to his snack on monday:
Monday, when he was 54 at snacktime at school, the cook called me and told me that the dietician wrote down and told them that only 4 teddy graham crackers equals 1/2 starch exchange. LOL When I told MY dietician that, she was like "oh really?" Then she said, well, unless they are using a kind that I am not aware of... 4 teddy graham crackers are only 1/4 starch exchange. Um, yeah, thats kinda what I thought too! Anyway, when the cook told me that, I said, "no, 4 teddy graham crackers are 1/4 starch exchange, 8 teddy graham crackers are 1/2 starch exchange, and 16 teddy graham crackers are 1 full starch exchange." So I told her since hes low, have him drink 2 oz of milk, and give him a total of 16 teddy graham crackers and he should be fine. Well, it turned out well because by dinner time at 5:30pm that night, he had a great number.
Oh, and check this out! Ok, many of you know that Lenny's birthday is next month, and he will be turning 4 years old. The other day, he told me "Mom, Lenny has Type 1 Diabetes, Pap Pap and Grandma Sylvie have Type 2 Diabetes". OMG I was blown away! How does an almost 4 year old KNOW SO MUCH?!?! LOL. He is so smart about his diabetes, what he can and cant have, how he feels, etc. That same day, later that night, I had his meter and lancing device ready and waiting for him to finish going potty. They were sitting on the kitchen table, and while he was pottying, I was picking up the living room a bit and changing Mackenzie's diaper. He comes trotting out of the bathroom, closes the door, sits down at the table, and checks his own sugar!! The only thing I had to do to help him was remind him to push the test strip in all the way before putting blood in it! OMG! LOL. I mean, he went step by step the same way me and daddy do it! Wiped his finger with the alcohol filled paper towel, blew his finger off, poked his finger with the lancing device, squeezed out a little blood, wiped off the first bit of blood with a dry paper towel, squeezed out a little more blood, I reminded him to push in the test strip into the meter all the way and wait for the blood symbol to appear, he put the meter/test strip up to the blood drop all by himself, wiped off the excess blood from his finger and waited till it stopped bleeding, and looked at his number! OMG OMG OMG! Hes getting tooooo big and tooooo smart! LOL That day, the knowledge he showed me absolutely floored me! So now, I have been letting him do it himself (with some assistance) more often.
LOL Next step... he will wanna do his own shots! LOL. Wonder how long thats gonna take lol.
Anyway, that is all the updates I can think of right now. I will let you all know what his A1C test results were and how they compared to what they were at diagnosis as well as what normal levels are and the goal range for them for diabetic kids.
Till next time....
